This story goes back to March 28 last year. I know the exact date because it happened the day after me birthday. After 15 years of having a pond wildlife got me. I am on pond forums and hear all the horror stories about Herons and Raccoons and other wild life that invade ponds. Now sometimes wild life is not bad as you see little Sparrows sitting on top of spitters taking a drink and green frogs come for a visit and sit on top of the lily pads.
But when animals disrupt your pond knocking things over and uprooting plants that is bad enough. But when they eat your fish that is downright devastating.
Well this happened to me last year as I had over 40 common and comet gold fish of various sizes and ages with the oldest at 15. Well I went outside to check on my fish and to my horror I saw scales and fins all over my deck. The surviving fish which were about 15 were scared and on close examination most were injured. To make a long story short only 2 of my fish survived.
After some construction in the backyard which involved having to rebuild my pond, I buy some new fish and add them along with my 2 survivors. Some advice from a pond forum and milkcrates with holes cut in them for the fish to go into and a net was installed. No problems since then until Tuesday I went out back and what do I see a nasty Commarant sitting on the pond and the net pulled partially into the water. Now I run over and scare the bird away he flies over to the pilings and watches me as I check to make sure everyone is okay.
Now the pond is surround by decking on 3 sides, so I have to go up on the deck to fix my net. So I start yelling at the bird to go away, like he understands, not paying attention to what I am doing as I come off the deck, which is a 2 foot drop since I went over the side like always and not the steps, my leg slips forward on the wet ground and the other one gets caught underneath me and once again hurt my ankle and get pissed at myself as I lay on the wet ground. So now I am sure the bird is laughing at me, my fish are hiding from me and my cat is crying that he wants to go in, and I am soaked and in pain. As I think of it now the whole thing was funny, but only because I did not get seriously hurt.
Then to make matters worse the bird came back again yesterday to see if the net is still there.

This time I just opened the back door and he flew away, I was able to see the net was still in place so I did not have to hobble down to fix it.
The joys of ponding when wildlife comes for a visit.
