A couple of years ago, right after we bought our Artic Cat ATV, I was riding trails on our property. This was before the drought had become so severe here in Tennessee and we had gigantic mud puddles that I enjoyed plowing through. The biggest one was a swampy area about 100 yards long, and 20 feet across...rather deep to if you didn't stay towards the sides !! Anyways, this was about my third trip through it for the day and I guess I was feeling a little over-confident and ventured too close to the center. Ended up stuck in mud way up over the running boards and couldn't move forward or backwards !! The worst part about it that it was the middle of the summer and I was in shorts and tennis shoes. Definately not prepared to have to wade through a swamp ! We had adopted a dog named "Hope" that stays out with David's aunt right across from the property, but anytime we go out there she is right there with me. I had no way of calling David for help, my 2 way radio had fallen off in the same mud puddle the week prior. I screamed out hoping that David would somehow hear me, but he was about a mile away at our site on the creek waiting for me to return. BUT, Hope did hear me !! Out of nowhere, here she is standing on the edge looking at me...out of desperation, I told her "go get David, Hope. go get him for me! ". She turned and took off through the woods ! A short time later at the campsite, David said Hope came running up to him, barked and ran down the trail. She did this a few times before David decided to follow her, but low and behold it worked !!
She brought David directly to the spot where I was stuck and saved the day !
We've since then bought a winch for the ATV so if I get stuck again, I'm able to pull myself out, but I always take Hope with me just as an added safety feature !!
